Why Florian Wirtz isn’t playing today for Liverpool with injury news

Liverpool is back on the pitch Saturday against West Ham United.

Florian Wirtz isn’t out there with them, though. The massive summer transfer is sitting this one out.

It shouldn’t stop Liverpool from handling the Hammers, but it could have longer-lasting consequences if Wirtz is forced to miss further time.

Why isn’t Florian Wirtz playing today?

Florian Wirtz isn’t playing Saturday due to a back injury.

Arne Slot already confirmed Friday that this would be the case.

“I don’t expect Florian to be available so that’s a disappointment, of course,” Slot said, via Liverpool’s official website. “Every time a player is not available it’s a disappointment and it’s also something I didn’t expect after last week, but that’s sometimes how things can evolve and unfortunately this time not in a positive way.”

Wirtz had finally been finding his form.

“It’s definitely a shame,” Slot said. “He has rhythm, of course, and in my opinion it’s already a big accomplishment of him that he stayed fit for such a long time because he had to make a step from where he played towards Liverpool, towards the Premier League, and that he stayed fit tells you a lot about the mentality and work-rate of a player, and the performance staff.”

When is Florian Wirtz coming back?

There’s a genuine uncertainty about Wirtz’s potential return timeline.

Slot was asked if he had a timeframe in mind.

“No, at this moment of time, no – and usually when I say that I do know that but I don’t want to share it! But now I honestly don’t know,” Slot said.
