The Spanish club Real Madrid issued an official statement regarding the case of Vinicius Junior, a star player, who was subjected to racial abuse by Benfica player Gianluca Prestiani during their Champions League playoff match.

The club stated: “Real Madrid today provided the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) with all available evidence regarding the events that occurred last Tuesday, February 17, during the Champions League match our team played in Lisbon against Benfica.”

It added: “Our club has fully cooperated with the investigation conducted by UEFA following the unacceptable acts of racism that took place during that match.”

The statement continued: “Real Madrid expresses its gratitude for the great support and affection received by our player Vinicius Junior from all sectors of the football world.”

It concluded: “Real Madrid will continue to work in collaboration with all institutions to eradicate racism, violence, and hatred in sports and society.”
