Although Chelsea have been the team most strongly linked to Jeremy Jacquet, it is understood Liverpool have agreed a deal with Rennes for the French defender.

Despite their injuries, the Reds will not welcome the 20-year-old to Anfield this month.

Instead, a £55million plus £5m in add-ons agreement has been reached for Jacquet to move to Merseyside in the summer. Personal terms have already been agreed, and a medical will take place today.

It is uncertain whether Jacquet is being replaced to compete with Ibrahima Konate or replace him. His fellow Frenchman’s Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season, and there has been little noise about an extension.

Chelsea could yet launch a late hijack, so the reigning English champions are eager to wrap up the transfer as quickly as possible.
