Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool remains a burning topic following his bombshell comments at the end of last year. The Egyptian striker has now rejoined Arne Slot’s squad after representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations. The 33-year-old made the switch to Anfield in 2017 after an unsuccessful spell at Chelsea and few could have predicted the remarkable journey that lay ahead.
During his near-decade on Merseyside, he has become Liverpool’s leading Premier League marksman and also holds the club’s European scoring record. His trophy cabinet at the club is virtually complete, having lifted the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
Earlier in 2025, it appeared increasingly probable that he would depart, with Saudi Pro League clubs circling and his contract running down.
However, Salah committed his future to the Reds by signing a fresh two-year agreement in April.
When Liverpool endured a difficult spell towards the end of last year, Salah found himself relegated to Slot’s substitutes’ bench. His departure once again became a possibility following a heated post-match interview, and Salah’s comments leave his long-term future at Liverpool in doubt.
Following a 3-3 draw with Leeds, Salah made a rare appearance in the mixed zone to speak directly to reporters. Despite having signed a new contract just months earlier, he revealed his true feelings in a shocking statement.
“I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season. Now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why,” he said. “It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.
“I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I am on the bench for three games so I can’t say they keep the promise. I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden, we don’t have any relationship. I don’t know why, but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.”

When asked if his relationship with head coach Slot had deteriorated, Salah confirmed: “Yeah, there’s no relationship between us. It was a very good relationship and now all of a sudden there is no relationship.”
His strong stance suggested that he was seriously contemplating his future at Anfield.
Responding to these revelations later in the week, ahead of a Champions League trip to Inter Milan from which Salah was excluded, Liverpool’s boss said: “It was a surprise to me when I heard he gave the comments he gave.”
Shortly after, Salah flew to AFCON with Egypt, where he aided them in reaching another semi-final but fell short against the eventual champions, Senegal.
In the immediate aftermath of Salah’s outburst, there were suggestions that he might seek a move in January. Although this frosty episode has since thawed, the Egyptian’s future on deadline day remains decidedly uncertain.
It is set to be a busy day on Merseyside, however, with the Reds hoping to bring in a defender following injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley.
Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida has been linked, but work needs to be done in order to bring him in.
