Man Utd’s first deadline day transfer decided in Casemiro replacement | Football | Sport

INEOS were planning for a quiet window. They are yet to confirm a single incoming, but with the prospect of reaching the premier European competition now more than realistic, and the payday that comes with it, may force their hand back into the market. Casemiro is set to depart at the end of the season and the squad is in need of another midfielder. Here, our Express Sport writers have taken a look at what we would do with our first act for United on deadline day…
Charlie Malam – Carlos Baleba
Casemiro’s off at the end of the season so United need to reshape their midfield. Kobbie Mainoo is a guaranteed starter going forward but he needs extra support. We know Carlos Baleba is a target and the Cameroonian, only 22, would be a dream signing. It’s unlikely the Red Devils reunite him with international team-mate Bryan Mbeumo at Old Trafford today at least, but not impossible. A powerful physical presence, Baleba is a brilliant ball carrier who has the attributes to dominate matches on and off the ball. He has a lot of room for growth but alongside Mainoo could form a thrilling partnership.
Amos Murphy – Ruben Neves
It’s a surprise Manchester United haven’t moved for a midfielder this month, given the relative lack of options at Michael Carrick’s disposal. Ruben Neves is a player they should be testing the waters for, not least because he has six months left on his deal with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Neves has plenty of Premier League experience and would help improve the quality of their squad, even if United only have the league to focus on between now and the end of the season.
Jack McEachen – Ruben Neves
United are crying out for another midfielder. Going from 3-4-3 to 4-2-3-1 simply means that more numbers are required and only Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo are up to standard. Ruben Neves is coming to the end of his Al-Hilal contract in Saudi Arabia and his ball progression, coupled with Premier League experience, presents the Portuguese international as the perfect signing on deadline day. An injury to any of United’s three midfield starters would derail their Champions League qualification bid.
