Man Utd can still do five deals now despite transfer window closing | Football | Sport

The transfer window has slammed shut and it’s been a quiet month for Manchester United and Michael Carrick. Not that it particularly looks like they need any reinforcements, given United’s performances since Carrick returned to the club as interim head coach.
The ex-Red Devils ace has overseen three wins from three matches in charge, with United in a strong position to qualify for next season’s Champions League. But Carrick would still be able to add to his squad following Monday’s transfer deadline, given United can still sign free agents whenever they want. Express Sport have picked out some potential free agent options who could bolster the Old Trafford outfit’s squad.
A cult hero during his time at Manchester City, Raheem Sterling’s dismal stint with Chelsea came to an end last month, with the winger now a free agent. He’d by no means be a starter for United, but given Patrick Dorgu’s lengthy injury, Sterling could provide some muscle to the 20-time champions’ attack.
It was rumoured that United might have looked at adding depth to their midfield in January, but INEOS and co. opted to keep their powder dry instead. Part of the reasoning is believed to be so that they can save money for the summer, but by adding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to their ranks, it would be a cost-effective move, with few strings attached. The ex-Liverpool and Arsenal ace knows the Premier League and is still just 32 years old.
Paco Alcacer was once regarded as one of the finest marksmen in Europe, but following a stint with Borussia Dortmund, his career somewhat nosedived. He is also aged just 32 years old though, and if needed, could certainly do a job as a back-up to Benjamin Sesko.
Admittedly, this one would likely be much more difficult to pull off, given Divock Origi’s strong connection to Liverpool. The Belgian scored in the 2019 Champions League final, but after joining AC Milan in 2022, he struggled to kick on with the Serie A outfit. He’s still without a club and could also do a job as a back-up attacker.
And finally, another name Premier League fans will be well aware of, Kurt Zouma. The ex-West Ham United ace endured a difficult spell with Romanian side CFR Cluj, culminating in the defender’s departure in January. He’s currently unattached and would also make for a solid back-up, should Carrick decide his squad needs extra options.
