Liverpool’s first deadline day transfer decided but Slot must act fast | Football | Sport

Liverpool would be wise to act before Monday’s 7pm transfer deadline. Arne Slot’s defence has been hit by numerous injuries, with Jeremie Frimpong joining Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Geovanni Leoni on the treatment table. The Reds have been forced to use Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai as makeshift defenders over the past week.

The Reds attempted to remedy the situation by signing versatile Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida. But because he is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, with no recall option in his contract, negotiations proved too difficult and such a deal is now unlikely to continue. Here, our Express Sport writers have decided what our first course of action would be at Anfield before the window closes.

Jack McEachen – Givairo Read

Any signing has to be a right-back, or at least someone who can cover there while Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley are sidelined. Arne Slot gave Givairo Read his debut at Feyenoord and the teenager has only kicked on from there, racking up double-digit assists before his first 50 games. The 19-year-old is a Liverpool fan and Slot’s connections back in the Netherlands could take this one over the line, for a player who could make an impact now but is also a look to the future.

Amos Murphy – Denzel Dumfries

Right-back is a problem area for Liverpool right now, given the latest injury to Jeremie Frimpong. Couple that with the issue that Conor Bradley picked up at the start of the month, Arne Slot has a problem to solve. He can either look internally, or turn to the market for reinforcements. Should he prove to do that, Denzel Dumfries is the man Liverpool should be getting.

Charlie Malam – Lutsharel Geertruida

The door hasn’t fully closed on a deal for Lutsharel Geertruida. The problem is that Sunderland want a replacement, and Liverpool have left it very late in the window for the Black Cats to get one. That’s made a deal very unlikely. But the Reds should put their money where their mouth is and offer a handsome fee of compensation to get it done. He’s an ideal addition, having been vice-captain in Arne Slot’s title-winning Feyenoord team. He can play right-back, centre-back and in defensive midfield if needed. And he’d come at a reasonable cost to sign permanently in the summer if he does well. Show Sunderland the cash and they can be talked into business. Betting on Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez not to get injured again between now and the end of May is negligent, and what’s a few million to help see Liverpool into the top four, and go deeper in the Champions League and FA Cup.
