Liverpool Jeremy Jacquet fears addressed as club yet to announce move | Football | Sport

Liverpool fans could be feeling a sense of deja vu following the conclusion of the January transfer window, given new signing Jeremy Jacquet hasn’t yet been announced. Rewind six months, and Reds supporters were waiting on tenterhooks for Marc Guehi’s move to be confirmed following the summer transfer window slamming shut.

Guehi was on the brink of being announced as a Liverpool player, with suggestions that his medical had been completed ahead of a £35million switch from Crystal Palace. However, the transfer fell through at the 11th hour, with the failed move leaving somewhat of a gaping hole in Liverpool’s squad.

Liverpool have paid an initial £55million for his services, with an extra £5m in add-ons included as part of the deal. But for Liverpool fans wondering where their new starlet is, don’t be alarmed, history isn’t repeating itself.

That’s because while the Merseysiders won’t have Jacquet to call upon between now and the end of the season, the young defender won’t arrive at Liverpool until the summer. Rennes, who have secured a club-record transfer for Jacquet, were determined to keep hold of him until the end of the season, as they go in search of European qualification.

Speaking about the move, Rennes boss Habib Beye remarked: “This deal is not done, I don’t want to comment on something that is not real, it’s a supposition. He will not be here for training today, we don’t know if he can play tomorrow but we’ll see depending on the situation.”

Before adding: “The fact of negotiating his transfer now and obtaining the sum that the club wants, (respecting) the player’s wish and still having him (for the end of the season), is perhaps the best deal we can have.”

Liverpool can, effectively, announce Jacquet at any time they desire, once the move is finalised. They are not bound by the January transfer window’s restrictions.

Away from the Jacquet deal, Liverpool will return to Premier League action at the weekend when they take on Manchester City. The reigning champions enter the fixture on a high after beating Newcastle United 4-1 on Saturday, but will be out for revenge, given they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat against City earlier in the season.
