Liverpool’s defensive issues have been well-documented this season and they suffered another blow on Wednesday night when Jeremie Frimpong limped off against Qarabag with a muscle injury. With Conor Bradley out for the season, Frimpong’s injury means Liverpool will be without a right-back for the weekend clash against Newcastle United. Joe Gomez isn’t ready to return and Arne Slot will be reluctant to deploy Dominik Szobloslai in that role as he’s been their best player this season in midfield. It’s raised the question whether Liverpool will be tempted to explore the market for a new right-back this summer and Slot has addressed this possibility.
He said: “As a club, we always make decisions – what we think are smart decisions – not only in the short term but the long term, which is why we sign younger players. It always depends on whether there are players available that we think can help us. If there are, can we afford them.I just said that we don’t have a squad where we have four right-backs and 12 midfielders and three or four no.9s. That’s not how it works over here. So we have to do smart things for the near future, but also for the longer future.” While Frimpong’s injury isn’t viewed as long-term, there’s still serious doubts over his suitability to play right-back in England and we’ve analysed five potential Liverpool right-back options – valued on Transfermarkt at €30 million or lower.
Five Liverpool right-back options valued under €30m
Ben White would be an excellent addition for Liverpool for several factors but mainly as he’s equally comfortable at right-back or centre-back. It’s unlikely that Arsenal would sanction a sale in January but the Gunners need to improve in selling players and they’ve got a plethora of defenders on their books. White has only played 1,001 minutes this season and he’s dropped down the pecking order, so Liverpool could ask the question.
Givairo Read would be the dream right-back signing for Liverpool as he’s widely viewed as one of the best youngsters in that position across Europe. Read has already made 50 senior appearances for Feyenoord and Bayern Munich have been heavily linked. Although Liverpool aren’t expected to make an addition this month, Read could be a long-term option as he’s also currently sidelined with injury.

While Josh Acheampong is viewed as unattainable, Chelsea’s business model revolves around selling young talents for profit. It’s no secret that Liverpool are huge admirers of the 19-year-old, who can also play at right-back or centre-back. Achreampong has the potential to become a full England international and Liverpool could view him as a long-term investment.
Amar Dedic is a fascinating option as the Benfica star can play at right-back or left-back. Dedic only moved to the Portuguese club in the summer from Salzburg, Liverpool could test the waters. The 23-year-old already has 24 caps for Bosnia and he’s proven that he’s more than capable of performing at the highest level with an excellent display against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Agustín Giay is a left-field option and has the lowest market value of the five candidates on the list at €11m. The Argentina U20 international has been heavily linked with Chelsea in the past and Bayer Leverkusen were rebuffed in the summer after making an approach. Palmerias, however, will be under no pressure to sell as he’s contracted until 2030 but he can also play centre-back.
