It was a frantic deadline day after a relatively quiet January transfer window. That said, clubs across the world still spent over €2 billion on new signings, which further highlights the incredible wealth within football. Premier League clubs, once again, had the highest total spend of €453 million and the top five deals all involved English top-flight clubs.
Antoine Semenyo’s €72m move from Bournemouth to Manchester City was the most expensive January deal, while Lucas Paquetá’s return to Brazil with Flamengo ranked third. The majority of the biggest clubs in the world didn’t complete a single transfer as they prioritised doing their business in the summer – Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona didn’t spend a penny. But which clubs were the biggest spenders across the winter transfer window? Let’s find out!
The biggest spending clubs in winter transfer window
While the transfer window has closed for the biggest leagues in the world, it does remain open for some nations. For example, Süper Lig clubs can complete deals until Friday, the Brazilian window remains open until March 3rd and MLS clubs can sign new players until March 26th. But from analysing the top five league transfer window from January 1st to February 2nd, Man City are the biggest spenders.
Semenyo’s arrival accounts for the majority of their €95m spending but Marc Guéhi also arrived from Crystal Palace for €23m. Unsurprisingly, five of the top five biggest spenders are English clubs with Palace in second (€90m). Al-Hilal complete the top three after investing €25m to sign Karim Benzema on deadline day. Two Brazilian clubs feature in the top twenty list and their spending isn’t over, while Fenerbahce ranks ninth.
