Deco Out of Barcelona and Flick May Resign

Features of Victor Font’s Electoral Project: Deco Out of Barcelona and Flick May Resign

Determining the sports structure of a team is one of the most important aspects in any presidential elections, as the selection of the coach, the sports director, and the contracting policy are crucial elements in gaining the trust of the fans. Although the presidential elections for FC Barcelona have not been officially announced yet, Víctor Font, one of the main competitors of Joan Laporta, has already started to reveal the outlines of his project and his future choices.

Font confirmed in statements to RAC 1 radio that if he wins the club presidency, Deco will not continue in the position of sporting director, emphasizing that the new management will build a sports structure that aligns with the needs of the German coach Hans Flick.

Font said in his press statements: “Deco will not be our sporting director. We will create a structure that suits Flick. I will not mention the alternative name because he is currently under contract, and there will be no people unrelated to the sporting structure.”

On the other hand, Hans Flick does not agree with Font’s vision, as the German coach expressed his complete satisfaction with working with Deco, affirming the existence of mutual trust and complete understanding in player selection and football philosophy. He said, “I am very happy with the current situation with Deco. We have mutual trust and are looking for the same quality of players. I have never experienced this harmony before.”

Font explained that he wishes for Flick, who has one season left on his contract, to continue. However, the continuation of the German coach if Font wins does not seem guaranteed, as predictions suggest that the German coach might resign and forgo his final season.

Flick considers himself part of Joan Laporta’s project and has expressed his readiness to renew his contract if the current president wins a new term, provided that this happens after July 1st, the date Laporta would officially assume his duties if he wins.

Despite Font’s positive statements about his desire to retain Flick, the German coach does not hide his hesitation to continue with a new management, which makes his future with Barcelona largely dependent on the results of the upcoming elections, amid widespread public appreciation for his contributions to the team.
