Arsenal launch bid to sign surprise striker in unexpected deadline day transfer | Football | Sport

Arsenal are targeting two emerging Scottish Premiership talents – with Hearts forward James Wilson set for a surprise Premier League switch on deadline day. With the 7pm January deadline approaching rapidly across the UK, it had been widely believed that Wilson, who initially burst onto the scene at Hearts but has recently struggled for game time, might be departing on loan.
That scenario may indeed materialise – though perhaps not quite as people expected. Arsenal have initiated discussions over a remarkable loan arrangement for Wilson, which would allow the Premier League leaders to monitor him closely within their system before committing to a permanent transfer in the summer. Wilson is currently on his way to London in preparation for a deal being agreed.
Wilson has found first-team opportunities limited at Hearts this campaign, with just one start, yet the 18-year-old has already amassed eight senior goals across 45 appearances – not forgetting he has a senior Scotland cap to his name.
In terms of experience, he’s considerably ahead of his peers in the same age bracket, and it seems Arsenal are paying close attention as the deadline approaches.
With Wilson only under contract until 2027, this summer represents Hearts’ final opportunity to secure a substantial transfer fee. The club do have an option to extend his current deal by a further year. Otherwise, they could face the dreaded compensation tribunal in 18 months’ time.
This development follows last night’s Scottish Sun report suggesting the Gunners have made their move for St Mirren youngster Evan Mooney.
Arsenal have maintained a long-term interest in the 18-year-old, with ongoing negotiations reportedly involving an initial £400,000 fee for Saints, plus an additional £400,000 in conditional add-ons.
