Arsenal transfer at risk of collapse after Gunners make deadline day swoop | Football | Sport

Hearts are demanding a hefty fee to approve James Wilson’s potential short-term move to Arsenal. The Premier League leaders reached out to the Scottish Premiership leaders over the weekend, expressing interest in bringing the 18-year-old striker into their development squad until the end of the season. It is understood that Arsenal wish to closely monitor Wilson by giving him regular playing time in their under-21 team before deciding whether to make a permanent offer.

However, Hearts will only agree to a deal if the London club agrees to an upfront transfer fee, and they have spent the last 24 hours waiting to see if Arsenal would be willing to meet these demands. Manager Derek McInnes would rather Wilson stay at Tynecastle and compete for a first-team spot as the Jambos strive for a historic title triumph.

However, the young forward who has one senior Scotland cap has spent most of the season on the bench, with McInnes favouring more seasoned options to spearhead his attack. Wilson has started just once in the Premiership and was brought off at half-time.

Sources close to the player believe he is eager to make the move, but discussions will remain on hold until Arsenal are ready to incorporate a substantial fixed fee into their proposal. It is the only incoming deal Arsenal are likely to do on deadline day.

Sandro Tonali has been linked with a spectacular move to the Emirates, but Newcastle have firmly dismissed any idea that the Italian is departing St James’ Park today. The Magpies are baffled by rumours the Londoners have been in contact about a late deal.
