Liverpool could announce two transfers today as Richard Hughes springs into action | Football | Sport

Liverpool could be set for a frantic deadline day with the Reds potentially set to announce two deals before the window closes. It’s been a fairly quiet month for the Anfield giants, who haven’t made any additions to their first-team ranks. They’ve signed two young defenders in Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye, but they will go into the youth system rather than the senior squad.

Chelsea had been trying to land Jacquet for themselves, but Liverpool managed to swoop in on the penultimate day of the window. Jacquet is expected to undergo a medical on Monday, paving the way for the move to be officially announced.

Liverpool could also enter the market for a right-back following injuries to Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong. The latter is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks after he was substituted in the early stages of the midweek victory over Qarabag.

It leaves the Reds without any options on the right side of defence, meaning a last-minute swoop could be on the cards to strengthen their ranks until the end of the season.

They’ve been linked with a potential move for Denzel Dumfries, but it remains to be seen whether Inter Milan are willing to sell the Dutchman in the final hours of the window.

Such a move would seem highly unlikely after Inter president Giuseppe Marotta insisted there was ‘absolutely no chance’ of Dumfries leaving the San Siro before Monday’s deadline.

Speaking over the weekend, he said: “Liverpool keen on Dumfries? Some phone calls are to the limit of correctness, done even in a sudden way, which do nothing but destabilise. Absolutely no chance. Dumfries stays with us here at Inter.”

Arne Slot has already suggested that Liverpool will look to sign a right-back if the opportunity arises, saying: “I think you know the answer. The answer is if we think a player can help us and we think it is possible, we will do so.

“Those are conversations that do not take place in this room. I gave the answer I gave. If that means it’s likely or unlikely then okay. It could be a quiet day Monday. You want to play golf?”

Earlier, the Liverpool boss said: “We as a club always make smart decisions. We not only look at the short-term but the long-term. That’s why we sign young players, who can develop.

“It always depends on if there are players that are available that we think can help us. If they are, can we afford them? And is this to be helpful for the longer-term future, because our players come back from injury as well. We have to do smart things for the near future and the longer future.”
