Champions League draw in full: Liverpool and Arsenal paths clear | Football | Sport

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are already in the Champions League first knockout round, but Newcastle United face a two-legged play-off tie to make it five Premier League clubs in the last 16. The Magpies were one of eight seeded teams in today’s draw at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland, having finished 12th in the league phase and luckily escaping a tie with Monaco, instead landing a favourable match with Qarabag.
They were alongside Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, with the eight unseeded sides being Benfica, Bodo/Glimt, Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Monaco, Olympiacos and Qarabag. Newcastle already knew they would face either Monaco or Qarabag, as they finished 21st and 22nd, respectively, in the league phase, with PSG to play the other.
Eddie Howe and Co. would then face either Barcelona or Chelsea in the round of 16 if they defeat the Azerbaijan side. By drawing Qarabag instead of Monaco, it increased the chance of an all-English affair in the last-16 with the Magpies no doubt fancying their chances against Qarabag, who were beaten 6-0 by Liverpool earlier this week.
As for the league phase-topping Arsenal, one of Atalanta, Dortmund, Leverkusen, or Olympiacos awaits them in March. Mikel Arteta’s men are, however, guaranteed to avoid one of Atalanta or Dortmund after they were drawn against each other.
Their north London rivals Tottenham know they will face either Atletico, Brugge, Galatasaray or Juventus. Liverpool will also play one of those four.
Manchester City were the last English club to qualify for the round of 16, and will face one of Benfica, Bodo/Glimt, Inter or Real Madrid. Sporting will also play one of those four after finishing a place above Pep Guardiola’s side in the league phase.
The teams in the round of 16 will have further clarity about who they play in March after the knockout phase play-offs, with the first legs on 17/18 February and the second legs the following week on 24/25 February. They will then find out for sure after the draw on February 27, when the potential quarter-finals and semi-finals will also become clear.
