Liverpool have to sanction emergency transfer to stop season falling apart | Football | Sport

It’s been a stop-start season for Liverpool so far. After a glittering start to the campaign, the Reds went on a torrid run, which took manager Arne Slot to the brink of being sacked.

Liverpool did start to turn things around over the festive period, but last weekend’s defeat to Bournemouth saw the Merseysiders crash right back down to earth. Funnily enough, their form in Europe has been much different, with Liverpool finishing the league phase of the Champions League ranked third.

It should – at least in theory – give them an easier path to a potential final, but, that’s only if their rapidly depleting squad can handle the load. That’s because Arne Slot has yet another injury to contend with, this time to right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who limped off during the mid-week win over Qarabag.

While it’s too early to offer a detailed prognosis of the injury, if Frimpong is to spend any period of time on the sidelines, it could represent a worry for Slot and co. Not least because Conor Bradley is already expected to miss the remainder of the season following an injury he sustained during this month’s goalless draw with Arsenal.

Bradley was stretchered off the Emirates Stadium pitch, and required surgery to fix the problem. And if Frimpong’s latest issue is even a quarter as bad as that, it will throw a spanner in the works for any hopes of silverware Liverpool have this season.

The good news for Liverpool is that there are still a few days of the January transfer window left to run. It gives Liverpool an opportunity to address their issue at right back, because if not, what’s the alternative? Joe Gomez? Wataru Endo plugging the gap instead?

If they choose to pursue a stop-gap option between now and Monday’s transfer deadline day, the Premier League champions will have to put their foot on the gas. Who that could prove to be is a question for the Liverpool recruitment team, and given that a right-back was unlikely to have been on their radar, it could prove a tricky task for the Anfield outfit.
