Harry Kane Explains His Position and Playing Style

Kane stated: “When the opposing team prefers to press, I like to drop back, sometimes even into defensive areas, to see if the center-back will take the risk and follow me all the way. It requires a lot of commitment from teams to do that, and that’s why you sometimes see me in positions similar to number 6 or 8 while in a half-turn position.”
He added: “In the attacking third, we don’t play with a traditional out-and-out number 9 striker, but we almost play with two playmakers (number 10), with wingers cutting inside and occupying the center-backs, which leaves them wondering: should they come out to mark me or stay back?”
Kane continued: “Every game is different, sometimes you face a low defensive block, and there aren’t enough spaces, and here you just have to look for positioning and movement inside the penalty area.”
He concluded by saying: “When I drop back and play passes to the flanks, the late entry into the penalty area or between the lines frees me up a lot. As a number 9 striker being individually marked by the center-backs, it’s hard to break free, but the late arrival forces them to run back and forth. I always try to use my mind and football intelligence to know where the space is and how to exploit it.”
