Michael Carrick has already implemented several cultural shifts at Manchester United following his interim appointment after Ruben Amorim’s departure. The English manager delivered a superb 2-0 victory over Manchester City in his opening match during this tenure.

Amorim was relieved of his duties at United following 14 months in charge. Darren Fletcher oversaw two fixtures before Carrick was appointed until a permanent successor is identified in the summer. Amorim had implemented numerous restrictions during his time at the helm, including preventing players from taking holidays during international breaks, banning food from the changing room and stopping his coaching staff from delivering complicated instructions to players. However, Carrick has rejected such prohibitions and has brought in several modifications to the club’s culture ahead of a crucial encounter with Arsenal. Express Sport examines some of these alterations.

Shorter training sessions

One element of the players’ daily routine that Carrick has modified is training sessions. The new manager has ensured that sessions are significantly shorter than they were under Amorim. However, these training sessions are considerably more rigorous than those previously undertaken by the squad.

Sources indicate that the atmosphere during training now differs dramatically from the Amorim era, with Carrick supported by two fresh assistant coaches in Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate.

Modified matchday arrivals

Another alteration Carrick has introduced relates to his team’s matchday arrival times. The Englishman has implemented a policy requiring his squad to arrive at venues slightly later than before. During the Premier League victory over City, the team coach arrived at Old Trafford approximately 15 minutes behind the previous schedule.

Carrick also seeks to ensure his players receive a proper welcome upon arrival. This deliberate adjustment by Carrick aims to prevent his players from lingering in the stadium whilst awaiting kick-off.

Focus on team bonding

Carrick appears determined to maintain a positive atmosphere at Carrington, with one of his new policies addressing players’ departure from the training facility. The new head coach has urged his squad not to rush off home immediately after training concludes, instead encouraging them to remain for meals and interact with colleagues.

He has taken time to engage with players who appeared unsettled at the club, including Kobbie Mainoo, and explained his vision for building relationships, emphasising that representing United is the greatest honour.

Dressing room appeal

Whilst Amorim chose to prohibit food in his changing room, Carrick is working to transform his into a space where players feel valued. He has established a new philosophy that no player should leave the dressing room without feeling they’ve been properly addressed. Harry Maguire has allegedly been identified as someone who will spearhead this initiative.

He featured in the victory over City and delivered an impressive defensive display. This methodology contrasts sharply with Amorim’s approach, who reportedly often dismissed players from matches without any dialogue.

Swift youth transformation

Whilst Amorim didn’t particularly focus on integrating academy talents into his squad, even sidelining figures like Alejandro Garnacho and causing unrest with Mainoo, Carrick is poised to adopt a contrasting strategy.

The Portuguese manager did facilitate debuts for players such as Chido Obi and Harry Amass, but compared to other coaches, he didn’t deploy Carrington’s most promising talents as frequently. Reports indicate that Carrick, by contrast, will prioritise giving young players opportunities.

He immediately recalled youngsters such as Habeeb Ogunneye from loan and brought Joe Hugill back to train with the first team upon his appointment.
