Barcelona Quartet Threatened with Suspension in Return Leg Against Newcastle

Barcelona faces a major challenge before the first leg match in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Tuesday evening, as several of its players are threatened with suspension due to receiving yellow cards, according to the Spanish newspaper ‘Mundo Deportivo’.

The Catalan team arrives at the match with significant absences, including Koundé, Balde, Andreas Christensen, Frenkie de Jong, and Gavi, with the latter traveling with the squad without full medical clearance to participate.

Regarding warnings, Lamine Yamal, Fermín López, Marc Casadó, and Gerard Martin face the risk of suspension. If they receive a yellow card in the first leg, they will not be able to participate in the return leg at Spotify Camp Nou, posing a significant challenge for coach Hans Flick in managing the team.

Lamine Yamal missed the match against Slavia Prague after receiving three yellow cards in the group stage and added a fourth against Copenhagen, while the other three players have two yellow cards in the continental competition.

On the other hand, Newcastle has two players threatened with suspension for the return match, namely English defender Dan Burn and midfielder Joelinton, who are expected to be starters in the first leg, meaning that receiving a yellow card would significantly impact the team’s lineup led by coach Eddie Howe.

Both teams are trying to manage these situations cautiously before the round of 16 first leg, as the absence of players due to warnings could have a direct impact on the match result and the teams’ strategy in the European competition.
