Wayne Rooney makes Man Utd and Michael Carrick job offer – ‘no-brainer’ | Football | Sport

Wayne Rooney has reiterated his willingness to join Michael Carrick’s backroom team at Manchester United. Carrick took up the role of United’s interim manager for the rest of the campaign last month. Prior to the former United midfielder’s appointment being formally confirmed, Old Trafford icon Rooney publicly stated he would gladly assist his ex-colleague as part of his coaching setup.
Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show when asked if he would join Carrick’s coaching staff: “Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer. I’m not begging for a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing.”
Rooney, who made 559 appearances for the Red Devils whilst netting a club-record 253 goals, has now reinforced that statement. So far, Carrick, who remains undefeated following five matches at the helm, hasn’t called upon the former United and England skipper for assistance.

When questioned again recently on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast about returning to management, Rooney responded: “I would go back if the right opportunity came up. I’m not in a rush.”
When former Premier League boss Sam Allardyce enquired whether he’d consider an assistant’s position, Rooney responded: “100 per cent yeah. I got asked this a few weeks ago about whether I’d go back to United in a different role.
“Of course I would. Probably the only two clubs I’d go back to [not as a manager] are Everton and United because they’re the two clubs which are close to my heart.”
Following retirement at Derby County, Rooney immediately took over at the club and secured survival, before suffering Championship relegation during the following campaign after a 21-point deduction. He departed and managed MLS outfit D.C. United between 2022 and 2023.
The 40-year-old returned to English football in October 2023 with Birmingham City. Nevertheless, he was dismissed in January 2024 after just two victories in 15 fixtures, with Birmingham ultimately suffering relegation.
He subsequently accepted the Plymouth Argyle position in May 2024 but encountered difficulties achieving positive results, especially on their travels, despite widespread support. He departed by mutual agreement in December 2024.
Rooney has remained absent from management since, instead undertaking broadcasting duties for organisations including TNT Sports and the BBC, whilst featuring on numerous podcasts. Rooney was spotted alongside Carrick in the Old Trafford Directors’ Box last month as both watched their sons compete in United’s FA Youth Cup fixture.
