Michael Carrick is reportedly keen on keeping Marcus Rashford at Manchester United, though numerous hurdles stand in his way. The United boss has enjoyed an impeccable start to his tenure, securing four consecutive victories despite the England international’s absence, away on loan at Barcelona.
The Red Devils have experienced a remarkable transformation under Carrick’s stewardship. Wins over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham have lifted the side into Champions League contention and reinvigorated belief across the dressing room.
Rashford’s relationship with former United head coach Ruben Amorim deteriorated, prompting a loan switch to Aston Villa last term. The 28-year-old then left for Barcelona in a loan arrangement that included a £26million purchase option.
The forward has flourished in Spain, notching 10 goals and contributing 13 assists across 34 appearances. Whilst it appears increasingly likely his future lies away from Old Trafford, reports suggest Carrick harbours hopes of reuniting with his ex-colleague at United.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Carrick wants Rashford’s services for next season if he gets the job permanently. Nevertheless, Barcelona are reportedly determined to activate his release clause.

Rashford himself has made his intentions clear regarding a permanent stay at the Camp Nou. Speaking in December about his prospects, the United loanee declared: “What I want is to stay at Barca.
“That’s the ultimate goal, but it’s not the reason I train hard and give my all. The purpose is to win. From the moment I arrived, I felt very welcome. For me, the reason I’m here is to help the team win trophies.”
Rashford shares a connection with interim manager Carrick, having been former team-mates for three years. Carrick has also previously worked with Rashford whilst serving on the coaching teams under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in addition to his earlier temporary managerial stint.

The 44-year-old’s rumoured intention to retain Rashford at United could only materialise should he secure the manager’s position on a permanent basis. Carrick faces 13 remaining fixtures to persuade the club’s decision-makers that he’s the ideal candidate for the role, with his squad already eliminated from both domestic cup tournaments.
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has already commended Rashford’s performances for his parent club. The German coach acknowledged the striker’s dedication, though he confirmed that any decision regarding a permanent transfer would ultimately lie with the club’s sporting director come summer.
Speaking in January, Flick said of Rashford: “Marcus’ performances have been really good until now, so we have to manage it, but it’s Deco’s job to do things for next season. We have to wait.
“We have months to go. For me, of course, with Marcus we have a player on the top level, but also with our situation, and what I appreciate a lot from him [is his desire to be here].”
