Will Barcelona Pay a Fine After Withdrawing from the Super League?

Barcelona has officially confirmed its withdrawal from the Super League without any penalty or financial fine, according to the Spanish newspaper ‘Sport,’ ending the debate over the potential costs of withdrawal that had raised questions since the announcement of the decision today.

The founding clauses of the tournament indicated the possibility of paying a fine of up to 300 million euros for the founding clubs that decide to withdraw, a substantial amount that made separating from the project difficult given the current financial situation of the club, but Barcelona will not bear any of these costs.

Sources explained that the agreement reached by the club’s president, Joan Laporta, allows the club to withdraw from the Super League without any financial obligation, a condition that paved the way for the final decision of the Catalan club.

This agreement is based on a fundamental rule in the founding of the Super League stating that if more than 70% of the founding clubs withdraw, as is the case currently, the club is not required to pay any amount, noting that the club will only lose the 4.6 million euros it invested as a social participation in the project.
