The draw has been made, the fixtures set, the tickets are on sale and the countdown has begun… in just a few months, the World Cup 2026 will kick-off in North America and it is set to be the biggest in history.
All eyes will be on England to see if they can claim the grand prize on the 60th anniversary of that historic 1966 triumph. This time, head coach Thomas Tuchel is in charge and an unbeaten qualifying campaign has once again got the nation dreaming.
The Tartan Army will be following Scotland who have qualified for the first time since 1998, whilst Wales and Northern Ireland could yet meet in a winner-takes-all play-off in one last attempt to reach this summer’s finals.
Elsewhere, it is set to be a tournament of firsts, as minnows Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan all make their first-ever appearances at the expanded 48-team World Cup finals.
The World Cup 2026 could also prove to be Lionel Messi’s final time representing holders Argentina, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s final bid for glory wearing the colours of Portugal.
And then there’s the controversy. Ticket price rows, concerns about US immigration policy, reports of boycott threats over US President Donald Trump’s actions, and fears about extreme heat.
