The dust has settled on what proved to be a rather underwhelming January transfer window, during which Manchester United, alongside numerous other Premier League sides, accomplished little in terms of dealings. Nevertheless, it’s been a turbulent month at Old Trafford for various reasons.
Ruben Amorim received his marching orders at the beginning of January, with Michael Carrick taking the reins as interim manager for the rest of the campaign. Whilst many supporters were keen to see whether the 44-year-old would delve into the winter market for additions, Carrick instead focused entirely on delivering performances on the field and reversing fortunes for the Red Devils.
Carrick presided over a commanding 2-0 victory against Manchester City in his opening fixture, before dismantling Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates the subsequent week.
A battling 3-2 triumph over Fulham followed on Sunday afternoon, as Carrick maintained a perfect record of three wins from three matches.
Whilst no senior signings were finalised on Monday evening, several transactions involving youth players occurred; meanwhile, reports surfaced of discontent from one first-team player after Jason Wilcox allegedly prevented a departure from Manchester United.
Here, Express Sport examines some of the key developments from the transfer sphere concerning Manchester United….
Permanent departures for three players
Sam Mather completed a permanent transfer to Kayserispor on January 17, bringing to an end his time at United since joining as a seven-year-old. Following successful loan spells at Rochdale and Tranmere Rovers, the 21-year-old secured his move to the Turkish Super Lig halfway through the transfer window on a free transfer.
Nevertheless, a clause in his deal ensures that United will receive a 20 per cent share of any future transfer involving the winger.
Joe Hugill, meanwhile, departed the Red Devils for an undisclosed sum, signing with Scottish Premiership contenders Kilmarnock.
The forward, 22, arrived at Old Trafford in 2020 but couldn’t establish himself in the senior squad. He instead experienced loan spells with Burton Albion, Wigan Athletic, Carlisle United and Barnet. Defender Rhys Bennett also moved to Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed amount, having spent the 2024/25 campaign with the club.

Loan arrangements for five additional players
Harry Amass moved to Norwich City for the remainder of the season before sustaining a ‘serious’ training injury. The 18-year-old left-back had previously experienced a loan stint with Sheffield Wednesday.
Defensive midfielder Toby Collyer, 22, also switched from West Bromwich Albion to Hull City for the rest of the campaign, whilst Ethan Wheatley secured a loan move to Bradford City for the duration of 2025/26. The forward had previously spent time on loan with Northampton Town.
Just one minute before Monday’s 7pm deadline, James Scanlon secured a loan move to Swindon Town for the rest of the campaign. The teenage versatile attacking midfielder will experience his debut in senior competitive football with the Robins.
Gabriele Biancheri also finalised his maiden loan departure from United. The 19-year-old striker has moved to Rotherham until the summer.
Tyrell Malacia furious with INEOS
Tyrell Malacia was left incensed with Manchester United on Monday afternoon, as Wilcox allegedly prevented a deadline day transfer to Turkey whilst the full-back was preparing to catch his flight. The 26-year-old has been sidelined by the Red Devils this campaign, managing only one Premier League outing in 2025/26.
Despite these claims, no agreement or travel arrangements were confirmed between the player and club in recent weeks. The Dutch defender might also feature in Carrick’s plans for the remainder of the season, given United’s position on utilising him may have shifted following Patrick Dorgu’s recent injury.
