“We are on a really great run right now and we are just hoping that we can continue to work hard like that to win games. I’m really happy that I could help the team out.”

Posting on Instagram, Fernandes uploaded photos without any captains and attracted numerous responses from United stars from both the past and present.

Rashford was among those in the comments, replying with a ‘star’ emoji. The United loanee is currently enjoying a season-long spell at Barcelona, where he has adapted impressively at the Camp Nou.

The Catalan giants possess an option to secure the transfer permanently for £26million – with reports indicating they are willing to activate the clause.

Cunha, who was also on the score-sheet for United against Fulham, responded with a magic-wand and heart emoji, as Lisandro Martinez contributed: ‘Football’. accompanied by a magic-wand and star-struck emoji.

United are currently in fourth position in the Premier League – trailing third-placed Aston Villa by five points and second-placed Manchester City by six after both clubs dropped points this weekend. Villa suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Brentford, while City were held to a 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur.

“I’ve said it before the City game, I think this is a special place and it does special things,” Carrick told reporters after their win at Old Trafford. “Credit to the boys. We knew today was going to be a really tough game.

“I’ve been getting questions all week, breaking down a low block, beating teams that we’re supposed to beat. It was never the case today as Fulham are a really good, good team. I knew we were going to have a lot of questions to answer. I’d been talking to the players all week about how good Fulham are and the dangers.

“Don’t just assume we’ll turn up and, if we play well, we’ll win. I said to the players at half-time the game was going the way I thought it would go. It’d be hard work because they’re a good team. They were 5-1 down to Man City and ended up pushing them to the limits at 5-4. Credit to the boys, it was a late goal we conceded last week to then go and win and – especially today – it was even more tough to take probably, to then find a winner for Benji.”

Next up for United comes another home game against Tottenham on Saturday, February 7 at 12.30pm.
